'We don't hire on skills we hire on attitude'

To all job seekers who read my post, I am sure you have heard recruiters, or employers tell you they hire on attitude, rather than on skill. With a positive attitude potential employees can be taught.

Does this exist in theory or in practice? If I had to guess I would say in the former only. I know of so many candidates who are rejected from jobs because their resumes do not match the recruiters advert specifications word for word.

Candidates are not given a chance to project positivity, enthusiasm or charisma. Having worked in solution sales I know personality counts, it is often the 'character' who sells not necessarily the academic.

There are candidates wondering why they have no personal correspondence with recruiters. Whilst I acknowledge recruiters are often inundated with resumes there are no excuses for poor customer service. When a candidate calls for feedback his/ her queries should be addressed.

In order to place a good candidate in the right job, the job seeker should have a positive attitude. Bad attitude leads to high company turnover, low drive and little productivity. People with a positive attitude yet low skill set may not be able to perform, so employees need to seek out the middle ground.

To hire on both attitude and aptitude, requires passion and commitment, which can be revealed easiest in person. Whilst a smile may take a candidate a long way such people need to be trainable. With a background in technology I know that some companies are using software as a means of looking for candidate IQ matches, which in my eyes is not necessarily the best solution since EQ (emotional intelligence) stands for something.

When we meet people regularly, we get to know and understand them and that is why I am committed to the idea of bringing recruiters and candidates together frequently. I want to do away with the frustrations that both candidates and recruiters are forced to deal with by bringing both parties together in a comfortable setting.

With a growing network, I would like to encourage candidates and recruiters to sign up with me now.

I am an open networker.

  1. Hi Jason,
Great post. I can totally relate to this on a few levels. Firstly, I need a job immediately! This last year I've tried to launch my own business. I've hit a few speed bumps - realised I don't have a unique enough proposition nor the network in Sydney to make it viable. Hence, I am looking to re-enter the workforce. While I do have solid qualifications and experience, my CV reflects a diverse career history with no clear path. Aussies don't like this and I have found that I am not even getting interviews. I'm not sure where to turn. I'm getting desperate and starting to consider really low level stuff, which I'm not sure I'll even be able to secure because that also requires a certain 'profile'. if you can organise your job related networking events I'd be very interested. I'll even help you set it up! Anything at the moment... Cheers, Ged (linked in Gerard (Ged) Benn)

  2. Awesome post Jason. I've been looking at returning to the full time workforce for a month and it is shocking the lack of customer service from agencies. I fully support your concept and applaud you for the effort. Susan (LinkedIn - Susan Vercoe)
